This quiet view of a drawbridge seems to have been inspired by the painting with a similar composition by Jacob’s brother Matthijs Maris (1839 -1917) of 1871, now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (fig. 1). The present watercolour is a version of  Jacob’s closely comparable watecolour dated 1875 in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (fig. 2). This must have been a popular subject, of which a painted version is in the National Gallery, London (fig. 3), M. van Heteren,
