Henri Cassiers (1858-1944)*

A View in a Village with a Bridge over a Stream

signed ‘HCassiers’coloured chalk and oil on paper
225 x 225 mm.

Private Collection, The Netherlands.

Henri Cassiers was originally educated as an architect before training as an artist at the Academies in Brussels and Sint-Joost-ten-Node. He was active as a painter of maritime subjects and fisherfolk in Belgium and later in Holland, mostly in Zeeland and Katwijk, further North. He was an illustrator for different magazines in Belgium and made designs for postcards and book illustrations as well.

It has been suggested that the present view may be in Giethoorn, which would be an exception in his oeuvre.
